๐ŸŒฟ Our story

A city farm with community at its heart.

Rice Lane City Farm has been part of Walton life since 1979. What began with local residents creating something positive for their neighbourhood has grown into a much-loved green space where people, animals, nature and community come together.

๐Ÿ“– A little bit of history

From historic ground to a living community space.

Rice Lane City Farm was set up in 1979 by local residents in Walton, Liverpool. The community leased the former Walton burial ground and its buildings from St Nicholas Church and began transforming the site into a place where local people could work together, learn practical skills and experience farm life in the heart of the city.

The land has a remarkable character of its own. Old graves and pathways remain part of the landscape, while animals graze, woodland grows and wildlife thrives around them. Over the years the farm has cared for rare and traditional livestock breeds, developed growing areas and created opportunities for people to enjoy nature without having to leave Liverpool.

๐ŸŒณ Today, the farm is a green oasis of around 24 acres โ€” a place with deep local roots, plenty of character and generations of memories.

For many local families, Rice Lane City Farm is somewhere they first visited as children and later returned to with children of their own. That sense of belonging is a huge part of what makes the farm special.

๐Ÿ’š What we're about

More than animals. More than a day out.

The farm exists to make a positive difference to people and the local community, using animals, nature, learning and shared experiences to bring people together.

๐Ÿค

Community

We want the farm to be a welcoming place where people of different ages and backgrounds can meet, take part and feel connected.

๐Ÿ

Animals & care

Our animals are at the heart of farm life, helping visitors learn about livestock, responsibility, compassion and the natural world.

๐ŸŒฑ

Nature & growing

We celebrate green spaces, wildlife, food growing and hands-on outdoor experiences right here in the city.

๐ŸŽ’

Learning

From school-age children to adults, the farm creates opportunities to learn practical skills and discover more about animals, food and the environment.

๐Ÿงก

Wellbeing

Fresh air, animals, meaningful activity and friendly faces can make a real difference. We aim to offer an enjoyable and supportive community environment.

๐Ÿ™Œ

Volunteering

Volunteers have always been a vital part of the farm, sharing time, skills and energy to help keep this special place going.

๐Ÿšœ Rice Lane today

Still rooted in the same big idea.

More than four decades on, the farm continues to serve Liverpool, particularly the Walton and Fazakerley communities. Our work reaches people from school-age children through to older residents, including people with additional needs.

We want Rice Lane City Farm to remain a friendly, practical and inspiring place: somewhere you can meet animals, enjoy green space, learn something new, volunteer, join a community activity or simply make a brilliant family memory.

Every visit, donation, volunteer hour and word of support helps keep that story growing.
